Real vs. Fake Crystals: How to Tell if a Crystal Is Natural
Real vs. Fake Crystals: How to Tell if a Crystal Is Natural
As crystals have grown in popularity, so has the number of dyed, heat-treated, and outright synthetic stones being sold as the real thing. If you want the authentic article — for its value, its natural beauty, and (for many) its genuine energy — it helps to know the signs. Here’s how to tell a natural crystal from a fake.
1. Color that looks “too good”

Nature is rarely perfectly uniform. If a stone’s color is impossibly vivid, candy-bright, or evenly saturated from edge to edge, it may be dyed. Real amethyst, for instance, usually shows subtle variation — lighter and darker zones — rather than one flat, electric purple.
2. A price that seems too low
Quality natural crystals take time to mine, cut, and finish. A “natural” stone priced far below comparable pieces is a red flag — it’s often glass, plastic, or reconstituted powder pressed into shape.
3. Tiny bubbles inside
Hold the stone to the light. Perfectly round air bubbles usually mean glass, not crystal. Natural inclusions — wisps, veils, tiny fractures, or mineral flecks — are actually a good sign. They’re nature’s fingerprint.
4. The temperature test
Genuine crystals are poor conductors of heat, so they feel cool to the touch and warm slowly in your hand. Glass and plastic warm up almost instantly.
5. Watch the name
Some “crystals” give themselves away in their names. Cherry quartz, opalite, goldstone, and blue or green “obsidian” are typically man-made glass. When in doubt, look the name up before you buy.
6. Buy from sellers who are transparent
The simplest protection is a trustworthy source. Reputable brands tell you exactly how their stones are treated — and the best possible answer is the simplest one: not at all.
Why authenticity matters
Beyond value, authenticity is the whole point. A dyed stone may look pretty, but it’s no longer the unaltered piece of the earth it appears to be. If you believe crystals carry the energy the planet spent millions of years forming, then a natural, untreated stone is the only one that carries it honestly.
This is exactly why SANSUN works only with natural crystals — never dyed, never artificially enhanced. Each stone is chosen for its true mineral character, so what lives against your skin is precisely what the earth made.
