What is a crystal, exactly?

How crystals are formed

Most crystals form along one of three broad paths:

• From molten rock. Deep underground, superheated, mineral-rich magma cools over long stretches of time. As it cools, atoms lock into ordered patterns — and the slower the cooling, the larger and clearer the crystals can grow.
• From mineral-rich water. Water carrying dissolved minerals seeps into cracks and hollow cavities in rock. As that water cools or slowly evaporates, the minerals are left behind and crystallize layer by patient layer. Many quartz points and amethyst geodes form exactly this way.
• From heat and pressure. Far below the surface, immense pressure and heat gradually transform existing rock, rearranging its minerals into entirely new crystalline forms.
